If you don't have a spoke weight, your base is constantly coming un-done and/or your carefully measured spokes will shift.
The spokeweight also has inches listed, measuring from the center, so that you can centralize your pattern easily.

Using this spoke weight definitely makes basket base construction easier. It makes marking spoke centers and base dimensions so simple. It also is great for holding spokes in place when weaving the base. I've also used it to aid in upsetting the basket spokes. I've found it to be an invaluable tool.
